Clerkenwell, [London UK], is one of the most important design hubs in the world for all things furniture. Clerkenwell Design Week is an annual event showcasing leading UK and international brands in a series of showroom events, exhibitions and special installations that take place across the area.
Celebrating its 8th year, Sit-Stand.Com attended CDW 2017. It is fascinating to report the meteoric rise of sit-stand desk. Three years ago height adjustable desks were few and far between with prices typically all above £1,000 per desk. Today we now see nearly all showrooms include sit-stand solutions. Whilst the range on offer is increasing the prices still appear to be too high and the focus remains on aesthetics rather than features and or value for money.
To ensure that the workplace revolution continues to grow at pace, it is now essential that architects and specifier become more knowledgeable about the affordable solutions which often offer the same or event better functionality than designer desks.
The History of Desking
We love visiting the “History of Desking” display at Wagstaff. It’s a really interesting summary of just how our workstation has changed so much in just 60 years.
The “ergonomic” desk originated with the beginning of the field of human factors or ergonomics after World War II. Yet today only 3% of office workers in most western countries have access to standing desks compared to over 95% in Denmark and 70% in Sweden. In Denmark the legislation requires an employer to provide a sit-stand desk to an office worker if they have to sit more than 2 hours a day at a desk. The rest of the world has a long way to go to catch up!
