Our child-sized Yo-Yo DESK® LEARN is a massive hit with the teachers and pupils who have been testing it out in the classroom.
“I would have a classroom full of these standing desks if I could,” says teacher Kerryn Witting, who teaches Year 2 and is also her school’s Healthy Schools Leader.
“At the least, a group of six desks in the classroom would be wonderful so we could use them for group work. I find children using the desk have better concentration, motivation and it helps focus their energy levels.
“The children love using it, and it is particularly helpful for pupils with attention issues. It makes them less likely to fidget, and obviously can’t swing on their chairs. Standing up, and being able to shift from foot to foot definitely improves concentration when we are doing lessons where their mind can wander.”
We asked Holy Trinity Primary School in Wimbledon to test the Yo-Yo DESK® LEARN because we wanted to see how it would stand up to everyday classroom usage. We also wanted to know how it would be used in practice.
Over several months of constant usage, the sit-stand desk looks as good as new and continues to operate perfectly. “There are a few pencil marks on the desk top, but that’s normal,” says Mrs Witting. “This standing desk is extremely strong and durable.”
Year 2 are fans of Yo-Yo DESK® LEARN features including the simple Click’n’Glide mechanism that means pupils (these ones are aged 6-7 years) can adjust the height themselves, and lockable wheels that ensure the desk can be secured while in use and easily wheeled to one side when not needed. They find the tablet holder slot is perfect for standing a screen, book or card, and the pencil holder is the ideal spot for a water bottle.
“It is so strong and durable that children can lean on it with all their weight, it adapts to every height – it even goes high enough that I can use it,” says Mrs Witting. “I sometimes mark books at it while the children are working. Standing time helps my lower back, and because I am raised above the height of the children I can see if any of them are having problems. I love it!”
Using the Yo-Yo DESK® LEARN fits perfectly into Holy Trinity Primary School’s health and wellbeing programme, which includes mental health awareness training, stress management and wellbeing tools and techniques that encourage pupils and staff to learn to recognise, acknowledge and manage physical and mental wellness issues.
