You may have read about the results of a ground breaking research project into the effectiveness of sitting less at work – the SMART Work programme. This is the largest standing desks research project of its kind worldwide from the University of Leicester and Loughborough University.
As reported in the BMJ, it was found that that reducing ‘sitting time’ by as little as one hour a day can result in:
- Increased energy, focus and productivity
- Better engagement at work
- Reduced sickness presenteeism
- Less back and neck pain
- Improved quality of life
The research team also calculated how much money an employer would save by adopting the SMART Work programme. They found that an employer saved £2.56 for every £1 spent, and that staff productivity increased by an average of 1.75 hours per week.
SMART Work’s evidence-based findings were so convincing that they were developed into a FREE toolkit for desk-based workers to use to support them in adopting techniques and habits that help improve their health and wellbeing, as well as engagement and productivity.
