Standing Desk Converter vs Desk Riser: UK Buyer’s Guide

Standing Desk Converter vs Desk Riser: Which One Do You Need?

A standing desk converter and a desk riser do the same job: they sit on the desk you already own and let you work standing or sitting without buying a new desk. In the UK the two names are used interchangeably, which is why shopping for one can feel confusing.

The real choice is between three things: a basic riser that lifts a screen, a full sit-stand converter that lifts your screen, keyboard and mouse together, and replacing the desk with an electric sit-stand desk. This guide explains each, shows how to choose, and covers what office buyers should check before ordering for a team.

If you already know what you need, you can go straight to our desk risers and standing desk converters.

What is a desk riser?

A desk riser is a platform that sits on top of your desk and raises your work equipment. A height adjustable version lets you move between sitting and standing in seconds. The words "riser", "converter", "sit-stand riser" and "desk topper" all describe the same idea.

The name causes confusion because it covers two very different products:

  1. Fixed monitor risers. A stand that lifts a screen to eye level at one set height. It helps your neck, but it does not let you stand.
  2. Height adjustable desk risers (standing desk converters). A frame that moves up and down so your screen, keyboard and mouse all change height together. This is what most people searching for a standing desk converter want.

When you search for a desk riser to start standing, make sure the product is height adjustable and that your keyboard moves with your screen, either on the same platform or on a tray attached to it. Otherwise your arms end up at the wrong height.

Converter, riser or electric desk: what is the difference?

A standing desk converter is the lowest-cost, fastest way to start standing. An electric sit-stand desk is the better long-term choice if you are buying new furniture anyway.

A converter is not a lesser option. If you share a desk, rent your space or want to trial standing first, it is often the right answer. Its limits are the desk it sits on and the weight it can carry, so check your equipment against the product specification before buying.

If you would rather replace the desk, see our sit-stand desks.

How to choose a standing desk converter

Work through these six checks in order and the right size usually becomes obvious.

  1. Measure your desk. A converter needs enough depth and a stable, flat top. Check the width and depth in the product specification against your desk.
  2. Count your screens. Single, dual and triple monitor setups need different widths. A 120cm wide model suits triple screens, while a single screen needs far less.
  3. Add up the weight. Include monitors, laptop, speakers and anything else on top. Classic Yo-Yo DESK models, for example, carry 15kg to 20kg depending on the model, so always check the figure for the exact product.
  4. Match the height range to you. When standing, your elbows should sit at roughly 90 degrees with the top of your screen at or just below eye level. Shorter users should look at slim ranges: the Yo-Yo DESK SLIM is designed for people 162cm or shorter.
  5. Make sure the keyboard moves too. If the keyboard stays on the desk while only the screen lifts, you end up reaching up. Choose a model with a keyboard tray, or one whose worktop raises both.
  6. Check warranty and support. Warranties on the range vary from 3 to 5 years depending on the model, so compare them before you buy.

Buying standing desk converters for an office

Converters suit offices that hot-desk, share desks or lease furniture, because nothing about the existing desks has to change. Before ordering for a team, check these points:

  • DSE assessments. Employers in Great Britain must assess display screen workstations under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, and that includes people working from home regularly. A converter should be set up to the assessment, not the other way round.
  • Mixed desks. Standardise on one or two models so spare parts, training and warranty claims stay simple.
  • Installation and training. Our installations team can help, and our office projects service covers larger orders. You can also ask about a free trial before committing a whole team.

Frequently asked questions

Is a desk riser the same as a standing desk converter?

Usually, yes. In the UK, "desk riser" and "standing desk converter" often describe the same height adjustable product. A fixed monitor riser is different because it lifts the screen once and does not let you stand.

Can a standing desk converter hold two monitors?

Yes, on models designed for it. Dual screen models such as the Yo-Yo DESK 90 are built for two screens, and wider models take three. Always check the weight and width limits.

Is a converter better than an electric standing desk?

Neither is better in every case. A converter costs less and works on the desk you already have. An electric sit-stand desk replaces the desk, so it suits you if you are buying furniture anyway or stand every day.

How long should I stand each day?

Alternate rather than stand all day. Many people follow a simple pattern of 20 minutes sitting, 8 minutes standing and 2 minutes moving, then adjust it to what feels comfortable.

Do I need a keyboard tray?

If your converter only lifts the screen, you will probably need one so the keyboard and mouse sit at the right height. Choose a model where the keyboard moves with the screen.
